We're so lucky... to have another Vincent and the Doctor lunch!

Another lunch inspired by one of my favorite quotes from one of my favorite scenes from one of my favorite episodes of Doctor Who. (Today is the 3rd Anniversary of its original airdate!)

The quote:

The scene:

The lunch -- a personal picnic of sorts with some macaroni salad and potato salad topped with a boneless pork riblet and cheese with cookies and yogurt in the side containers:
(Sorry for the "meh" quality of the picture. Lousy lighting and only my phone on me when I made it.)

Let's Dance Little Pookie!

Another favorite Boynton book today! The new laptop arrived yesterday and I have yet to load it with the files from the other one (like my actual watermark), but didn't want that to hold me back from showing you the cute:

For My Star

Last night was John's first grade mini-musical and today in school they're doing it all over again for their schoolmates. It was a super cute show and all of the kids seemed to enjoy themselves and today he has a lunch that celebrates the star that he is!
Grapes, Omega 3 Gummies, Tings, Beef & Cheese Quesadillas

Look! Sandra Boynton's "Your Personal Penguin"!

Too tired and too drugged on pain killers for my knee to write anything but oh how cute!!!

black+blum's Lunch Pot -- a 3rd Shift dieters best friend? (Thanks @blackblum)

I've been trying to figure out the best way to work out my allotted calories on the nights that I have to work. Working 11pm-7am and then sleeping as much as possible during the day makes eating ... well ... interesting. I finally decided that maybe it's best if I just plan on eating two meals while at work but the idea of having to lug two sets of dishes on the walk to the bus stop & then the bus ride itself is far from appealing.

And then I remembered that I had one of these in my cupboard thanks to the wonderful folks at black+blum (and yes, it's an affiliate link):

And now I'll need to buy more because ... WOW!

It's a Lunch Pot and has two separate containers joined together with a carrying strap and attached spork. Tonight it makes its maiden voyage to work:
In the bottom container I have some Special K Fruit & Yogurt cereal. We already have milk in the fridge at work and I'll toss a banana in my bag. Even if the only milk we have is whole that's still only 335 calories. In the top I have Healthy Choice Portabello Spinach Parmesan on top of some broccoli raab. A whopping total of 303 calories.

I definitely need to get my hands on more of these pots...

Another Not-So-Manic Monday

It always amuses me that Monday is the day that I have the most time to prepare and plan for .... and the day that John consistently asks for a "snacky lunch". The hardest part is probably picking out which box to use!

Scotty Meets Future Spock

My favorite part of 2009's amazing Star Trek? Simon Pegg as Scotty. (I swear the man could read the phone book and I would buy it in HD and watch it on my iPad.)  Unfortunately one of my favorite parts of my favorite part doesn't seem to be anywhere online in a video clip .... but I do have a sound clip .... and a lunch!

Are You From the Future?

The gang of Edible Geekery couldn't pass up doing a hop to celebrate Trek with the release of the new film so after you take a look at my lunch make sure you click on the button to beam over to the next blog (and so on). We're boldly going where no hop has gone before!
To honor poor always-hungry Scotty I've got a meal and a half (at least) packed in my Laptop Lunch box! In the top left I have a roast beef, provolone and tomato sandwich with Scotty and Future Spock picks I made. Under that is some mac & cheese with tomato slices and colby jack "Well, that's brilliant." The side containers have key lime yogurt, Hershey Kisses and yogurt covered raisins.

Now continue on your journey and see what's going on at Lunches Fit For A Kid!

Itty Bitty Butterflies

John asked for pb&j butterflies today and the only cutter I could find was our itty bitty one .... so itty bitty butterflies he got (along with yogurt raisins, veggie sticks, his Omega 3s and a frozen yogurt cup!):

A little lunch tribute to @TheKurtFuller and @Psych_USA

You know I love Psych. This season I've been especially enthralled with the increase in screen time of Kurt Fuller's Woody the Coroner! He always cracks me up and last week's episode was no exception -- especially when he was all tied up in the Psych office upon his own request. When asked how he was doing he said he was "happier than a swine in poo" (and then shortly thereafter had cheese puffs thrown at his head).
Of course, I immediately thought "LUNCH!"
Packed in my amazing pineapple box from All Things For Sale, I have some mac & cheese covered in barbecue sauce with a monterey jack swine ... and cheese puffs. Not exactly poo but even I'm not that crazy.

Mr. Wrinkles

While at the Dollar Tree of all places I found this sweet book for John called Mr. Wrinkles so that's the inspiration for today's lunch!
John has a peanut butter and jelly elephant, colby jack cheese giraffe, veggie sticks, grapes, a Mini Slim Jim and his Omega 3 gummies in his lunch box. There's also a frozen yogurt tube in his bag.

Ocean Life in @EasyLunchboxes (Thanks, @Storia_eBooks!)

Last night we were trying to figure out what to read for John's homework and swung over to the Storia store where we saw that they have Ocean Life -- for free! Of course we got it and loved it and he had to have it for lunch today.
John has tortellini with colby jack cheese sea creatures, veggie sticks with sour cream & onion Goldfish, grapes, mini cookies and his Omega 3 fish gummies. All, of course, in an EasyLunchbox!

Lazy Girl's Lasagna...ish

It's not really lasagna in the traditional sense, of course .... but it tastes just like it when all is said and done .... and it's a lot easier to throw together!

Packed in my monbento box, the top level has mini ravioli layered with cottage cheese and provolone butterflies (to match the butterflies on the lid). The bottom layer has red velvet yogurt and Special K Strawberry Fruit Crisps, and is going to stay in the freezer until I have to leave for work tonight. I have a 45 minute commute between walking to the bus stop and sitting on the bus so by the time I get to eat it should be perfect!

For those who bother paying any attention to I Wish I Had An Adipose you may think this is way too calorie heavy for a girl who's supposed to be trying to get healthier, BUT it clocks in at 730 calories total and is pretty much two meals (well, a meal and a half). One of the joys of working third shift is a screwy eating schedule so one level will probably be eaten around 12:30amish and the other about 4 hours later.

Doctor Who in a Beaba Tray

Today John gets a fun little snacky Doctor Who lunch!  I packed it in his blue Beaba tray. He as three small pb&j sandwiches -- one with a TARDIS and one with a Dalek. Grapes, LifeSaver Gummies (his Omega 3s are underneath), carrot sticks, Fritos, and colby jack "WHO." He also has a container of yogurt on the side.

May The Fourth Be With You!

It's May the Fourth! A day to celebrate all things Star Wars (and other stuff) ... and a great day for a BBF Blog Hop!

John hasn't watched much Star Wars but he has played an awful lot of Angry Birds Star Wars and was given some lunch boxes by a friend so we went with the Yoda one for inspiration for his lunch:
PB&J on top of veggie sticks, grapes, cheese, alphabet cookies, Omega 3 gummies in little container

May the 4th Be With You Blog Hop

Once you've completed the hop and made your way back here ...

Return to Base

May The Fourth (Doctor, of course) Be With You!

Today the Bento Bloggers & Friends are having a Star Wars themed blog hop to celebrate May The Fourth (make sure you come back any time after noon to check that out!). Of course, being the mega Whovian geek that I am, every time I hear the words "May The Fourth" my mind immediately goes to this post from the official Doctor Who tumblr:
I had to. I didn't want to tarnish the Star Warsiness of the hop, though, so my Doctor gets a post all of his own. He deserves it.  He is, after all, the definite article, you might say.
And now, the lunch.
Chicken parm and mixed veggies with provolone Doctor, words and 11 stars (for the 11 Doctors)

A Snacky Li'l Iron Man

A few days ago one of the packages I ordered for John's June birthday arrived -- a set of Avengers MiniMates (including his favorite -- Iron Man)! Today after school he has to go with me to work and will be spending the night there and I decided that it would be more fun for him if he had some new toys to take .... so ended up giving him his MiniMates before school. He had already requested a "snacky lunch" for today but I decided to turn it into a snacky Iron Man lunch -- especially after I found out that my two besties had done Iron Man lunches today at BentOnBetterLunches and BentoForKidlet!
John has turkey bites, a colby jack Iron Man, veggie sticks, grapes, his Omega 3 gummies and alphabet cookies spelling out Iron Man. He also has some flavored water in Belly Splashers bottle with an Iron Man top and an unpictured frozen yogurt tube.

I love you more...

John and I have a regular conversation.
Me: "I love you more than anything!"
Him: "Anything?"
Me: "I love you more than the sun and the moon and the stars in the sky!"
That's what he asked to have for lunch today. Makes me love him even more!

A local favorite!

My body is still trying to recover from the 19 1/2 hour work day so I didn't bother taking a picture of John's lunch for school today .... and tomorrow is pizza day in the cafeteria and he likes going through the line with his friends .... but I DID break out my amazing new box from AllThingsForSale and fill it up with leftovers from us ordering in tonight in order to take it to work. I was thinking, originally, that I would just get myself a large salad. I weighed in for the first time in a long time yesterday and even started a new blog to focus on getting myself healthy. A ginormous salad would have been  the smart thing to do (especially since I haven't made it to the grocery store to buy salad stuff myself yet this week). But then I saw Chicken Riggies on the menu. Ooooooh how I love me some Chicken Riggies! And it did come with a side salad so it's not all bad ;)

Minecraft Goes To The Zoo! (a disposable field trip lunch)

Today was the first grade field trip to the zoo and thanks to a good friend providing transportation (and, as it turned out, moral support) I was able to go, too! Rather than have John worry about losing or forgetting one of his lunch bags & boxes we go disposable/recyclable for field trips. Last year he had super heroes and this year Minecraft!
I had a clean container from some Chinese take-out and a clean sauce cup from something or other and, as luck would have it, they fit perfectly together AND perfectly in the brown paper bag from a local deli that I drew a Creeper face on (his name is on the back -- just in case anyone didn't realize it was his if I hadn't been able to go). For lunch he had a bologna and cheese zombie sandwich, veggie sticks, grapes, LifeSaver Gummies, his Omega-3s and a little brownie.
And now for the obligatory "ermagersh he's soooooooo cute" picture:

Shhhhhhh.... again.....

Weeping Angels don't really freak me out.

Daleks stopped giving me the severe heebie-jeebies before I hit puberty.

The Silence?

I wish I could forget all about them.

Oh.

Wait.

What?

Super Simple Earth Day Lunch

If you ask John "every day is Earth Day" .... but according to our calendar today is the official one so he gets a super simple Earth Day lunch! I cut his peanut butter & jelly sandwich into a circle using a drinking glass and then colored it "Earthy" using AmeriColor markers. The letters were cut from colby jack cheese using Wilton mini cutters. He also has his usual Omega-3 gummies, grapes, veggie sticks and a frozen yogurt tube (unpictured).

An Awesome Book of Love by @DallasClayton

We read Dallas Clayton's An Awesome Book of Love on John's iPad last night during a good snuggle. When I showed him his lunch this morning I got a big "Awwwwwww" out of him.
Yeah. It's definitely an "awwwwww" kinda lunch from an "awwwwww" kinda book.

It's a ... Stitchable?

John wanted a Lunchables-type "snacky lunch" today .... but he also wanted Stitch and he also wanted this specific box. I think he'll be pleased when he opens his bag at lunch today!

Sunflowers for Amy

It's not so much that I don't have anything to say about today's lunch but that the feels are so overwhelming that I just can't. Those who know will know.
Eggplant parmesan on top of pasta with provolone sunflowers
and mixed vegetables in cheese sauce with provolone letters
Van Gogh: They're not my favorite flower.
Amy: You don't like sunflowers?
Van Gogh: No, it's not that I don't like them. I find them complex. Always somewhere between living and dying. Half-human as they turn to the sun. A little disgusting. But you know, they are a challenge.
The Doctor: And one I'm pretty sure you'll rise to.
For all of the episode awesomeness, Netflix or Amazon Instant. For the trailer, watch this:

Minecraft Creeper

A few weeks back John took a Minecraft Steve lunch to school ... and today it's time for a Creeper! We're both still pretty addicted to the Pocket Edition of the game and now even Daddy is playing it, too. It's pretty funny some nights when we're all sitting around with our various i-whatevers playing. Right now I'm the only one willing to turn off Peaceful Mode so I'm the only one who actually gets to see the Creepers up close and personal ... unless John decides he wants to play with me (which he does. Often.).
Packed in one of his +EasyLunchboxes John has peanut butter and jelly on wheat for the Creeper and the "C." The rest of the letters were cut out of colby jack cheese and are sitting on top of Original Tings. In the side compartments he has a clementine, a couple of Golden Oreos and his Omega 3 fish gummies.

I wasn't actually planning on doing another Minecraft lunch right away but then one of my favorite bento blogs posted one yesterday along with a great giveaway for a ThrifTee Gear bag and I decided it was a good time for the Creeper to make an appearance here so I could also help share the awesomeness there! We already have two ThrifTee Gear bags and we love them so click on the image below to head on over and see the impetus for this lunch .... and enter to win your own bag!

John Nickle's The Ant Bully (@Storia_eBooks)

John has seen the animated version of The Ant Bully at least a dozen times. When he saw that the original book version was available for his Storia app he was thrilled and asked to have it added to his bookshelf. I was afraid it would be too advanced for him but he read it with very little help .... and then asked for lunch. Actually, he asked for lunches so there may be more Ant Bully appearances this week!
In his lunch today John has Lucas made out of a peanut butter & jelly sandwich, veggie chips, grapes, fruit snacks with Omega 3s, and monterey jack letters.

Castle's Heat Wave

I finally finally started watching ABC's Castle. I knew from the first couple of episodes that I needed to do a lunch (or several) ... and now that I'm finally caught up to the current season I'm finally doing it! I'm going back to the beginning since that's when I fell in love with the show and have packed myself a lunch for work based on Richard Castle and his first Nikki Heat novel, Heat Wave.
Packed in an Easy Lunchboxes Brights, I have a Healthy Choice Portabello Spinach Parmesan topped with provolone (and a pair of handcuffs from my best friend since Castle seems to find himself in handcuffs a lot). Out of the provolone I cut the name Castle using my mini letter cutters and then drew the outline from the book cover and Castle's personalized bullet-proof vest using a combination of AmeriColor gels and markers. In the top left I have a Three Musketeers bar cut in half (it's going to be a long night -- I need my chocolate!) and in the right I have a Mini Dipper filled with greek yogurt.

'Gators Have To Eat!

Today's lunch for John is based on some homework he did last night. They've been learning about animals, habitats and needs in school and last night John had to draw a picture of a favorite animal meeting a need in its habitat. John drew alligators in a swamp .... eating people. Sure! Let's turn it into lunch!
His alligators are pb&j. His people and the "yum" are empire jack cheese. He also has veggie chips, grapes, Fritos and his fruit snacks with Omega-3 gummies.

Simple Add-ons Make It Simply Awesome!

This morning I woke up and had no ideas for lunch for John. Well, I had a ton of ideas but not enough time or energy to get them done. I thought I would break the "fun lunch" trend and I was gutted. I know he probably wouldn't have cared, but I felt awful. I poked and prodded and then remembered some picks we had recently received from a friend but had not used yet. Problem solved! Those picks and some bright colored silicone cups and a very simple lunch became, in John's words, "simply awesome!"
John has a couple of smallish blueberry muffins, clementine slices, monterey jack cheese diamonds, fruit snacks (with his Omega 3 gummies), and a tube of Sixlets (and a tube of yogurt still in the freezer at the time the picture was taken). All on their own not a very exciting lunch. A little silicone, a fun box, and some simple picks? Mom is back to rocking the lunch bag :)

Happy Fish Fingers & Custard Day!

The Edible Geekery crew couldn't let the day go by without Doctor Who inspired lunches, now could we? The day, of course, in celebration of the first airing of "The Eleventh Hour" ... the lunch is a combination of that and the most recent episode, "The Bells of Saint John." Pretty timey-wimey of me, huh?
No actual custard was used in the making of this lunch. It was thrown together last minute and I wasn't about to go out in search of custard so as a stand-in I've got a side of greek yogurt (apple cinnamon flavored at that ... EEP!). From what I've read Matt wasn't actually eating fish fingers when the scene was filmed and I do have those so I'm calling it even. Along with the fish and yogurt I have a bed of alfredo noodles, and used provolone to make the wi-fi connection and TARDIS.

And because no Doctor Who lunch is complete without YouTubeage:

Then:

Welcome Back Game of Thrones!

Game of Thrones returns tonight and of course some of the Edible Geekery crew decided we needed to celebrate with a mini hop! After you're done here, click on the button at the bottom to head on over to see what's going on at BentoForKidlet!

I had a million and a half ideas of what I wanted to do. I've watched some previews and have looked at tons of pictures for Season 3 and when I saw that two of my favorite young British actors are joining the show representing House Reed I knew I had to continue the trend from my past GoT lunches and do a lunch for their family:
I've seen several different versions of the House Reed crest but it always has a gatorish lizardish type black creature on a green background so I used a cookie cutter and some coloring and my mini letter cutters to turn some provolone into a crest. It's sitting on top of some ravioli with some Mini-Oreos and cocktail sausages in the small compartments.

And I couldn't help the little shout-out to Eddard Stark. After all, House Reed has been devoted to House Stark for thousands of years ....

In case you haven't seen them, here are the original four:

Now, don't forget to go check out the rest of the hop!
